Textile yarns are in contact with many guides during spinning and winding. Yarns are also in contact with each other during the weaving and knitting process. The CTT Pin Friction test measures the friction of the moving yarn in contact with a solid material. This test complies with ASTM D 3108, which is the Standard test Method for Coefficient of Friction, Yarn to Solid Material.
The yarn friction affects the performance of the machine parts such as needles and yarn guides that the yarn comes in contact with. If the yarn has high frictional properties, these parts may need to be changed more than it is necessary, increasing the textile manufacturing cost. Additionally, high friction yarn will experience higher tension, thus increasing the chance for yarn breaks.
To reduce friction, wear and static electricity, special finishes are applied on the yarns. With the CTT friction tests, the affect of the various spin finishes on the yarn frictional properties can be accurately measured. While measuring the Coefficient of Friction, the most important requirement is to set and measure the Input and Output Tension with precision so that the coefficient of friction can be calculated accurately. This also ensures that the results are repeatable.
During the CTT Friction test, the machine applies and maintains constant Input tension on the yarn as it is going over standard friction surfaces such as metal or the ceramic pins. The output tension as a result of the yarn-to-pin interaction is measured by the Tensiometer. Windows based, user-friendly software calculates the Coefficient of Friction value as it plots the real-time tension graph. At the end of each test, the data is statistically analyzed, saved and ready to be exported to your database. The tension profile of a single bobbin or multiple bobbins is always available.
